You will be brought on a false trail when viewing ‘Mijn 15 stukken grond’. The monochrome aspect may suggest a state of tranquility and rest, but the work is in fact the result of a very and boisterous activity. A grinding in the head that translates into elimination, processing, stepping back and forth, sanding, lingering, hopping around, plodding.
The work is that of somebody fighting with matter and looking for extreme, far-reaching effects. Her ideas and initial thoughts may seem heavy, but are physically processed, trampled and walked on. Van Tichelen opposes the cult of aesteticisation which consists in putting layer upon layer of varnish. Her work translates into different stages of peeling off, cutting and wearing off, after which the elements are re-combined into a harmonic and light-footed whole.
In its prosaic context a Stuc Carpet is a product made of strong paper with a plastic layer of PE on both sides. The stuc carpet/tetra carton is water repellent and protects the surface. Thanks to its excellent moisture and impact resistance, the positive features of the standard protection products such as cardboard, foil and construction carpet are combined into one: stuc carpet/protection carton/tetra carton.
The runner initially intended to protect the area against paint splashes, becomes with Van Tichelen literally the artistic path and creation field.

Je wordt op een vals spoor gebracht bij het bekijken van ‘Mijn 15 stukken grond’. Het monochrome verleidt tot een vermoeden van rust, bewegingloosheid, maar dit werk is de neerslag van een vinnige en onstuimige bedrijvigheid. Een malen in het hoofd, een wegwerken, verwerken, heen en weer stappen, schuren, dralen, huppelen, ploeteren.
Het is het werk van iemand die de materie uitdiept en zoekt naar verregaande, extreme effecten. Haar denkbeelden en initiële gedachten kunnen zwaar zijn, maar worden fysiek verwerkt, vertrappeld en belopen. Van Tichelen gaat in tegen de cultus van het esthetiseren waarop laag na laag vernis wordt gelegd. Haar werk vertaalt zich in verschillende etappes van afpellen, verknippen en verweren om nadien te monden in een harmonisch en lichtvoetig geheel.
In zijn prozaïsche context is een stucloper gemaakt van een sterk papiersoort in combinatie met op beide zijden een laag PE kunststof. De stucloper/tetrakarton is waterafstotend en beschermt de ondergrond optimaal. Door de uitstekende vochtbestendigheid en stootvastheid zijn de positieve eigenschappen van de standaard beschermingsproducten zoals karton, bouwfolie en tapijt samengevoegd in één: stucloper / protectiekarton / tetrakarton.
De voetloper of stucloper die initieel bedoeld was om de ruimte tegen schilderresten te behoeden, wordt bij Van Tichelen letterlijk het artistiek pad en creatieveld.
Dit kunstwerk nodigt uit om stil te staan bij een persoonlijk traject.
