There is hardly any trace of the church chair. Ik was sawn into pieces, which were poured into layers of concrete. Encased in a pillar, robust, rough and hard — like the ascetic life that the Church held up to its followers as an ideal. The title, according to art historian Petja Gekiere, is a reference to the hypocrite, the hypocrite who makes us believe that he believes. He perseveres so hard that he transforms into a column and thus becomes part of the architecture, he becomes a pillar of the whole. Biting into the stone, the pillar biter himself is petrified. Forever imprisoned and deprived of the earthly existence to which the green pigment refers. A lesson in humility.”
